The Fascinating History of Hurricane Names

Did you know that hurricanes and cyclones were originally named after politicians? In the late 19th century, Clement Wragge, an Australian meteorologist, began the tradition of naming storms after political figures he disliked. This creative (and slightly petty) approach allowed him to humorously describe them as "causing great distress" or "wandering aimlessly." Over time, the system evolved, and today, storms receive names from predetermined lists to aid in tracking and public communication. While the practice no longer carries Wragge’s political satire, its origins remain a quirky and intriguing part of meteorological history.
